The Volkswagen Atlas series comes with a variety of techniques with which one can open the trunk. These options can be hands-free or hands-on. This article highlights these techniques.

2018 – 2023 Models
Hands-Free
- Ensure the ignition is off.
- Stand about two feet behind the rear bumper.
- Move your foot in a forward kicking motion under the bumper. (You do not need to make contact with the bumper.)
- The turn signals will flash once.
- You will hear a beep telling you that the trunk is unlocked.
- The trunk should be open.
Inside Trunk Button
- Ensure the ignition is off.
- Locate the open trunk switch icon on the driver’s side door.
- Pull the switch and hold
- The trunk door unlocks and opens.
Rear Trunk Button
- Ensure the ignition is off.
- Use your hands to press the trunk button under the edge of the trunk door just above the license plate.
- Hold down the button for about two seconds, then let go.
- The trunk door unlocks and opens.
Key Fob
- With the car ignition off, locate the trunk icon on the key fob.
- Press and hold the icon for about one second.
- The rear lights will flash once, and you will hear a chime.
- The trunk door unlocks and opens.
Emergency Manual Opening
If the electric trunk release levers don’t work, manually open the trunk by locating and using the release lever located inside the trunk.
- Access the lever by opening the rear liftgate.
- Spot a small handle or lever near the latch mechanism.
- Pulling on the lever releases the latch, and the trunk opens.
