Toyota RAV4: Enable/Disable TRAC/VSC/Trailer Sway Control

If your Toyota RAV4 is stuck in snow or mud, you may need to disable the TRAC/VSC/Trailer Sway Control systems so that all wheels spin at the same rate. You can turn off this system with these steps.

  • TRAC is Traction Control. It helps to maintain drive power and prevents certain wheels from spinning while driving on slick roads.
  • VSC is Vehicle Stability Control. It helps stabilize the vehicle when turning on slick roads.
  • Trailer Sway Control helps the driver control the vehicle better when a trailer is attached to the rear of the vehicle.

Disable TRAC System

  1. Locate the Traction Control Off Button button, normally located below the stereo system or informational display. On some models, it is located above the stereo system on the dashboard.
  2. Press and release the Traction Control Off Button button.
  3. The “VSC Off” and “Auto LSD” lights should illuminate on the instrument panel. Models with multi-informational display will show a “Traction Control Turned Off” message.

Disable TRAC/VSC/Trailer Sway Control

  1. Safely come to a complete stop and place it in the “P” gear.
  2. Locate the Traction Control Off Button button, normally located below the stereo system or informational display. On some models, it is located above the stereo system on the dashboard.
  3. Press and hold the Traction Control Off Button button for 3 seconds. A light that says “VSC Off” should appear on the instrument panel. Models with multi-informational display will show a “Traction Control Turned Off” message.

Now you should be able to operate the RAV4 with Traction Control disabled. Press the “VSC Off” button again to enable the systems again when desired.
