Why your oil light stays on after an oil change

Most modern vehicles track oil life using sensors and algorithms that factor in mileage, engine temperature, and driving conditions. After an oil change, the system needs to be manually reset so it can begin counting down from 100% again. If the reset is skipped, the oil life indicator or “Change Oil” light will stay on even though the oil is fresh.

Each manufacturer uses a different reset procedure. Some vehicles use a button sequence on the instrument cluster, while others require navigating through the infotainment system’s vehicle settings menu. HiRide’s guides walk through the exact steps for each vehicle, with model-year-specific instructions where the procedure has changed.
