Nissan Sentra: How to Open the Hood

If you want to change your vehicle’s engine oil or check the wiper fluid level, you’ll need to get under the hood. As simple as this might sound, it can be challenging for some, especially if it’s a new car. But don’t worry; if you need a little reminder or don’t know how to go about it, this guide is here to help you open the hood of any Nissan Sentra model!

Note: It’s important to make sure that the engine is turned off and has cooled down before attempting to open the hood. The engine and components under the hood can get very hot and might cause an injury if you touch them.

1995 – 2023 Models

  1. Locate and pull the hood release lever on the driver’s side under the dashboard, near the footwell.
  2. Locate and push the safety latch to the left. This safety latch is located at the front of the hood, near the Nissan logo.
  3. Raise the hood.
  4. Fit the hood support rod into the provided slot.

Common Problems with Nissan Sentra Hoods

As much as you expect to open your Nissan Sentra’s hood when you want to, it’s not always the case because of the following possible issues:

Broken or Stuck Hood Latch

Debris, such as dirt, small stones, and moisture, sometimes find their way into your vehicle’s hood latch. This causes wear and tear, rot, or rusting, which may hinder the latch’s performance.

Worn-Out Hood Release Cable

The hood release cable links the hood release lever with the hood release handle under the driver’s side instrument panel. The hood release cable can wear out or break due to friction as time passes. In some cases, the cord might malfunction due to overstretching.

Damaged Hood Release Handle

Just like the other parts of the car, the hood release handle can break, making it impossible to get the first hood pop that releases it slightly. This can be due to friction, strain, or debris deposit. It will need to be replaced with a durable one.
