Mazda 6: How To Open the Trunk

Opening a car’s trunk (or boot for UK-based readers) is something we usually do without thinking, at least until we get a new car or learn that our usual method isn’t working. As expected, the options to open your trunk are simple but change slightly across different Mazda models. We’ll explain how to open the trunk of a Mazda 6 in every model year.

2008 – 2022 Models

These later generations lose the keyhole, so the wireless keyfob and trunk release button are the only options available to open your trunk.

Keyfob

  1. Press the button on your keyfob with the icon of an open trunk.

Trunk Release Button

Note: There is a safety button in the glove box that you can use to activate and deactivate the trunk release button.

  1. Locate the trunk release button under the steering wheel and to the left ◀️.
  2. Press the trunk release button.

Note: In the later generations, the trunk will not open unless the car is parked or the hand brake is activated. Should the battery die and the electrical releases be inactive, you can reach into the trunk by pulling down 🔽 the rear passenger seats and pulling the trunk release handle.

2002 – 2007 Models

For the older models, you have three options to open your trunk.

Keyfob

  1. Press the button on your keyfob with the icon of an open trunk.

Trunk Release Button

  1. Locate the trunk release button under the steering wheel and to the left ◀️.
  2. Press the trunk release button.

Keyhole

Should the other options fail, there is a master key slot on the trunk.

  1. Insert your car key into the keyhole on the trunk.
  2. Turn the key to release the trunk.
