How to Open Fuel Door on the Chevy Malibu

Posted on January 1, 2021 by Mitch Bartlett 1 Comment

Whether you’re renting or have just purchased a new Chevy Malibu, you may wonder how to open the fuel door the first time you stop to refuel it. Don’t worry, we’ll show you how.

There actually is no fuel door release button or switch inside the Chevy Malibu. Follow these steps instead:

  1. Unlock all doors and exit the vehicle.
  2. Locate the fuel door on the rear passenger side of the Malibu.
  3. Press the rear portion of the fuel door inward and release. The gas tank door will pop right open. Newer models feature a capless system where you do not need to remove a fuel cap. Simply insert the gas nozzle and start fueling.

FAQ

Is there a way to lock the fuel door?

If tampering or theft of gas is a concern, an option would be to purchase a locking fuel cap. Be sure to check that the item fits your year model.
