2008 – 2023 Models
There actually is no fuel door release button or switch inside the Chevy Malibu. Follow these steps instead:
- Unlock all doors and exit the vehicle.
- Locate the fuel door on the rear passenger side of the Malibu.
- Press the rear portion of the fuel door inward and release. The gas tank door will pop right open. Newer models feature a capless system where you do not need to remove a fuel cap. Simply insert the gas nozzle and start fueling.
2000 – 2007 Models
- Slide your finger into the depression next to the fuel door.
- Pull the door outward.
FAQ
Is there a way to lock the fuel door?
If tampering or theft of gas is a concern, an option would be to purchase a locking fuel cap. Be sure to check that the item fits your year model.

Is there a way to lock the door to the tank?
No there is not I have already had hateful people try to tamper with my car. If you want a beautiful cheverlet and have hateful people you work with stay away from this car. Every car should have a locked gas door. It’s a stupid idea not to.
yes trying to find a gas cap that fits and lock or a lid that lock this is a problem cause the vehicle does not have a lock on the lid or a gas cap wow!
Thank you for this post! We are renting the car and had no clue how to open the gas tank. Much appreciated.
