Lexus IS Oil Maintenance and Scheduled Maintenance Reset Guide

·

The short answer: on a Lexus IS, the maintenance reminder is cleared by the owner after service, either through the driver information display or a trip-button and ignition sequence. Which one you use depends on your model year and instrument cluster. Lexus changed the IS cluster and menus between generations, and I can’t confirm exact button sequences for every year, so the steps below are the general method plus what to confirm in your owner’s manual.

Whatever the procedure, the reset only clears a reminder. It doesn’t change the oil, replace a filter, or fix a fault.

First, Identify Which Light You’re Looking At

Three different things get lumped together, and only one is a reset job.

  • Maintenance or service reminder: A message or indicator that you’ve reached a mileage or time interval. This is the one you reset after service.
  • Red oil pressure warning: Usually a red oil-can symbol. This is not a reminder. Pull over safely, shut the engine off, and check the oil level. Don’t keep driving on it, and don’t try to “reset” it.
  • Check engine light: An amber engine-shaped symbol. It means the system stored a fault. Clearing a maintenance reminder won’t touch it, and the cause needs diagnosis.

Your manual’s indicator section shows exactly how each one looks on your cluster. Gasoline engines are the only IS powertrains sold in the US market that I’m confident about, so you don’t need a separate hybrid procedure.

How to Reset the Reminder

Don’t reset anything until the work is done. If you did an oil change but skipped other scheduled items, only reset what you actually completed. Check whether your IS has one combined maintenance reminder or separate entries for oil and other service. Your manual’s maintenance section will say which.

Newer IS with a menu-driven information display

  1. Complete the service first and confirm the reminder is due or showing.
  2. Park safely and turn the vehicle on as your manual describes (ignition on or ready mode, depending on the car).
  3. Use the steering wheel controls to open the settings or vehicle information menu in the driver display.
  4. Find the maintenance or service item entry. The exact menu name varies by year and cluster, so check your manual for it.
  5. Select the item you completed and confirm the reset.
  6. Expected confirmation: The reminder message or indicator clears, and the interval restarts.

Older IS with a basic reminder light

  1. Finish the service.
  2. Follow the reset sequence in your manual. These typically involve the trip button and a specific ignition position, but the exact order and hold time differ by year, so don’t guess.
  3. Expected confirmation: The reminder light or message goes out. Some years may not display a numeric countdown at all.

I can’t say which model years have which setup. Some earlier years may only use a simple reminder with no detailed monitor, so confirm yours against the manual.

If the reset fails

  • Make sure the ignition or vehicle state matches your manual exactly. Starting the engine mid-sequence is a common reason it doesn’t take.
  • Check that you’re resetting the correct item if your car lists more than one.
  • Try the sequence again slowly, since hold times matter on button-based methods.
  • If it still won’t clear, a Lexus dealer can reset it, which is often quick if they did the service. You don’t need to buy a scanner or tool for this.

Oil Service Basics and Optional DIY Supplies

Oil type and capacity depend on your engine, so use the specification in your manual or on the oil filler cap rather than a general guess. Intervals also vary by year, so follow your maintenance guide. The IS comes with several engines. If you’re not sure what’s under your hood, this IS 300 vs. IS 350 comparison helps sort out the trims, and the Toyota 2GR-FKS maintenance guide is worth a read if your car has that V6.

If you’re changing oil yourself, confirm whether your engine uses a spin-on canister filter or a cartridge element before buying anything. A filter wrench only helps with the spin-on type. If that’s your setup, an oil filter wrench set covers most canister sizes, but check fitment for your engine first.

FAQ

Does resetting the reminder mean my oil is fresh?

No. The reset only clears the message and restarts the interval. If you reset without changing the oil, the car has no way of knowing, and you’ll be driving past a real service interval.

Will the reset clear a check engine light?

No. A maintenance reminder and a check engine fault are separate systems. A check engine light needs its code read and the cause fixed. A red oil pressure warning is more urgent still and means stopping to check the oil level.
