Kia Sportage Service Interval Reset: Instructions by Model Year

·

On most recent Kia Sportage models that have the feature, you reset the service reminder from the instrument cluster. Use the steering wheel controls to open the User Settings menu and find the service interval item. You don’t need a scanner or a dealer visit, and you shouldn’t pay for a reset tool.

Kia’s exact menu wording and button layout change with model year, cluster type, and trim, and I can’t verify every combination. So this guide covers the general method for each generation and tells you what to confirm in your owner’s manual.

Identify the Reminder You’re Seeing

Three different things get confused here, and only one is resettable by you.

  • Service reminder message: A text message in the cluster, usually when you switch the ignition on, saying service is due. This is the one this article covers.
  • Red oil can warning: This signals low oil pressure, not a due date. Stop driving safely, shut the engine off, and check the oil level. Don’t try to reset it.
  • Check engine (malfunction indicator) light: This means the engine control system logged a fault. Changing oil won’t clear it, and a service reset won’t either. It needs diagnosis.

Resetting a reminder only clears a message. It doesn’t change oil, rotate tires, or fix anything. Reset it only after the work is actually done.

Owner-Set Interval vs. Oil-Life Monitor

Many drivers expect a percentage-based oil-life monitor. Some brands work that way, like the system covered in our Jeep Grand Cherokee oil life monitor reset guide. As far as I know, the Sportage’s cluster feature is a service interval you set yourself, by distance and/or time, that counts down and then displays a reminder. It isn’t measuring how worn your oil is.

That matters for two reasons. The reminder is only as good as the interval you entered, and it may be turned off entirely. If you don’t see a service interval option, it may be switched off, or your trim or cluster may not include it. Check the user settings section of your owner’s manual to see whether your vehicle has it.

Reset Procedures by Generation

2005-2010 Sportage

These early models generally predate the cluster-based service interval menu. Don’t expect to find a reset procedure. The traditional method is a windshield sticker or your own log. Confirm in the maintenance section of your manual.

2011-2016 Sportage

Whether you have a service interval setting depends on the instrument cluster fitted to your vehicle. Some clusters have a settings menu, and others are basic. If you have a menu, try the general method below. If you find nothing, the feature likely isn’t equipped, and your manual’s user settings section is the place to confirm.

2017-2022 and 2023-Plus Sportage

These generations have a cluster with a User Settings menu on the trims I’m aware of. The 2023 and newer redesign has a different cluster layout, and hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions may differ again. Use this general method and confirm the exact labels in your manual:

  1. Park the vehicle and set the ignition to ON. Starting the engine is typically fine, but check your manual for what it specifies.
  2. Use the arrow, scroll, or menu buttons on the steering wheel to browse the cluster menus until you reach User Settings or a similarly named settings menu.
  3. Look for an item named Service Interval or something close to it.
  4. Select it and look for an option to reset or restart the interval. If the interval is turned off, you may need to enable it first.
  5. Confirm the reset. You should see the countdown return to the interval you set, or the service message should stop appearing at startup.
  6. Turn the ignition off, then back on, and check that the reminder no longer shows.

Menu names, button symbols, and the order of options can vary by model year and trim. Match each step to the instrument cluster section of your manual instead of trusting any article’s exact wording, including this one.

If the Reset Doesn’t Work

  • No service interval option: It may be unavailable on your trim or cluster, or switched off. Check the manual’s user settings pages.
  • Reminder returns: You may have changed the setting without resetting the count, or the interval you entered is shorter than your actual mileage since service.
  • Menu won’t respond: Some cluster menus lock out while the vehicle is moving. Park first and try again with the ignition on.
  • Warning light, not a message: Go back to the red oil pressure and check engine distinctions above. A reset won’t clear those.
  • Still stuck: A Kia dealer can reset it, and the service department can tell you whether your trim supports it.

Doing the Oil Change Yourself

If you handle your own oil changes, you only need basic tools. Our list of must-have DIY car tools covers most of it. The most useful extra is a drain pan sized for your vehicle’s oil capacity, and a low profile oil drain pan fits under many crossovers without much jacking.

A drain pan with enough capacity for your engine’s oil volume makes the job cleaner, so check your manual’s capacity first.

Oil type, capacity, and filter vary by engine and model year, so confirm all three in your owner’s manual before you buy anything. Search results alone aren’t proof of fitment. Once the work is done, record the date and mileage, then reset the reminder.

For a comparison, the process on another brand is covered in our guide to resetting the service due indicator on a Subaru Outback, which uses a different method.

FAQ

Do I need a scanner to reset the service reminder on a Kia Sportage?

No. Where your Sportage has the service interval feature, you use the cluster menu and steering wheel controls. A scanner isn’t required for that.

Will resetting the reminder turn off the check engine light?

No. The service reminder and the check engine light are separate systems. A reset only clears the reminder message, so a check engine light needs its own diagnosis.

How often should I change the oil in my Sportage?

It depends on the engine, model year, and how you drive. Severe use, such as short trips, towing, or extreme temperatures, usually calls for a shorter schedule. Follow the maintenance section of your owner’s manual, and set your service interval to match it.
