Kia Sorento Service Interval Reset: Instructions by Model Year

·

On most recent Sorentos, the service reminder is reset from the instrument cluster’s settings menu, using the steering wheel buttons, after the work has actually been done. It’s free and takes a minute or two. The exact menu labels depend on your model year and cluster type, so I’ll give you the general path and tell you where to confirm the details.

Some older Sorentos don’t have this feature at all, and that’s covered below too. First, make sure you’re looking at the right light.

Identify the Reminder Before You Reset Anything

Three different things can show up on a Sorento dash, and only one of them is a reset job.

  • Service or maintenance reminder: a text message in the cluster, often along the lines of “Service required” or a count of miles or days remaining. This is the one you can reset.
  • Red oil-pressure warning: an oil can symbol in red. This is not a reminder. Pull over safely, shut the engine off, and check the oil level. Don’t keep driving on it.
  • Check engine light: an engine-shaped symbol, usually amber. This is a stored fault and has nothing to do with the service interval.

Resetting a reminder doesn’t change oil, rotate tires, or fix a fault. It only restarts a counter. Reset only the items you’ve actually completed, and keep the receipt or a note of the mileage so you can track what’s still due.

Owner-Set Interval vs. Oil-Life Monitor

These are two different designs, and the difference matters for how you treat the reminder.

An oil-life monitor estimates remaining oil life from driving conditions and counts down a percentage. The Jeep Grand Cherokee oil life monitor is an example of that approach. An owner-set service interval is simpler. You pick a mileage or time interval, and the cluster counts down from it.

On the Sorento, the cluster feature I’d expect you to find is the owner-set type, usually labeled something like “Service Interval.” I can’t confirm that every trim and year works this way, so check the maintenance section of your owner’s manual. Whatever you set, the number should match the maintenance schedule for your engine and your driving conditions, not a guess.

If the reminder was never enabled, you won’t see it. A disabled interval is the most common reason people think the feature is missing.

Reset Steps by Generation

First and second generation (early 2000s through 2015)

I can’t confirm that these Sorentos have a cluster service-interval menu, and many likely don’t. If yours doesn’t, there’s nothing to reset. Track oil changes with a sticker or a log, and check your owner’s manual for any maintenance indicator it describes. If a light does appear, identify it using the list above before assuming it’s a reminder.

Third generation (2016 to 2020)

These models with an LCD information screen in the cluster are the likeliest to have a Service Interval option in the user settings menu. Labels can vary by trim and cluster, so treat this as the typical path and verify it in your manual.

  1. Park the vehicle and turn the ignition ON. Some settings only open in Park, so if the menu won’t respond, try with the engine running.
  2. Use the steering wheel controls (often a MODE button plus up/down and OK) to open the User Settings menu on the cluster.
  3. Scroll to the Service Interval option and select it.
  4. If it’s set to off or disabled, you’ll need to enable it and set the interval first. Use the figure from your maintenance schedule.
  5. Select the reset option, if your menu offers one, and confirm.

Expected confirmation: the cluster shows the full interval restarted, and the reminder message no longer appears when you next start the vehicle. If your menu has a different wording than “reset,” the manual’s service interval section will name it.

Fourth generation (2021 and newer)

These models use newer cluster and menu layouts, and the path to the service reminder differs between trims and cluster sizes. I won’t guess a menu name. Start the same way: ignition ON, vehicle in Park, and open the cluster’s settings through the steering wheel controls. Look for a service interval or maintenance item, possibly under a vehicle or general settings heading.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions may have a different maintenance schedule from gas-only versions, so check the maintenance section of your manual for your exact powertrain before setting an interval.

If the Reset Doesn’t Work

  • Menu not visible: your trim or year may not have it. Confirm in the manual’s cluster or user settings pages.
  • Option greyed out: try Park with the engine running, then ignition ON with the engine off.
  • Reminder is off: enable the service interval, set the mileage or time, then reset.
  • Message returns at startup: you may have reset a different item, or the interval may have been set shorter than your service. Recheck the settings.
  • Still stuck: a Kia dealer can reset it. You don’t need a scan tool or a purchase for the owner method.

For comparison, the process is quite different on other brands. The Subaru Outback service due indicator uses its own procedure, so don’t carry steps over from another vehicle.

Optional Supplies for a DIY Oil Change

You don’t need to buy anything to reset the reminder. If you’re doing your own oil change, though, a few supplies make it cleaner. A simple oil change funnel set helps avoid spills at the fill neck, and our list of must-have DIY tools covers the rest of the basics.

A basic funnel set is a budget-friendly way to keep oil off the engine bay during a DIY change.

Oil grade, capacity, and filter fitment depend on your engine and model year, so confirm those in your owner’s manual before buying oil or a filter.

FAQ

Does resetting the reminder mean my Sorento is serviced?

No. It only restarts the countdown. The oil change or other maintenance still has to be done, and the reset should follow the work.

Can I reset it without a scanner?

On models with the cluster menu, yes. The steering wheel controls are the owner method. A scanner isn’t required, though a dealer can also do it.

Why won’t my Sorento show a service reminder at all?

Either the interval is disabled in the settings, or your year and trim don’t include the feature. Check the user settings pages of your owner’s manual to find out which.
