Jeep Renegade: How to Reset Oil Light

Oil changes are crucial parts of car maintenance for almost every vehicle, including the Jeep Renegade. That’s why so many modern vehicles come with “Oil Change” lights to let drivers know when the next change is due.

However, that light won’t just go away on its own. This guide will teach you exactly how to reset a Jeep Renegade’s “Oil Change Due” message.

Reasons to Reset the Oil Light

The most obvious reason to learn how to reset your Renegade’s “Oil Change” light is if you do your own oil changes. After each change, you might expect the light to go away on its own. But it won’t. You’ll have to manually reset it, using the steps detailed further down the page.

If you let a mechanic handle your Renegade’s oil changes, you might wonder why you’d ever need to reset the light. Well, there are still situations where you might like to reset it. For example, if the light appears way before your next change is due, it might bother you while driving.

Alternatively, you might have your own oil change schedule which doesn’t align with when the light appears. In that case, there’s no need to pay any attention to it, and you might prefer to simply reset it each time to stop it annoying you.

How to Reset the “Oil Change Due” Light in a Jeep Renegade

Whether the light is merely bothering you, or you want to reset it after your latest oil change, here’s how it’s done. Note that this method only applies to Renegades made and sold in the U.S. We’ll talk about the European variant later on.

  1. Put your car safely in “Park” to begin, and turn the ignition to the “On” position. Don’t push the brake pedal as you do so, and don’t start the engine up.
  2. Push down on the accelerator pedal three times. You have 10 seconds in total for all three presses, so there’s no need to rush. With each push, you’ll see one or more warning lights vanish from the display.
  3. After the third pedal press, you can turn the ignition off, then immediately back to the “On” state.
  4. Start up the engine, and you should see that the “Oil Change” light has gone for good. You’ll also see an “Oil Change Reset” message on the dashboard to confirm the reset process.

How to Reset the “Oil Change Due” Light in a U.K. or European Jeep Renegade

Unfortunately, for those based in the U.K. and the rest of Europe, the situation isn’t quite as easy. The classic method of pushing three times on the accelerator – which should work fine for all U.S. Renegades – won’t work here.

In fact, there’s no simple method using buttons and pedals to reset the “Oil” light in these cars. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible. You’ll simply have to either buy a separate tool – like a multiscan – to connect with the on-board diagnostics (OBD) and reset the light that way.

Given that this can be a little complicated for those who are unfamiliar with how the OBD works, you may prefer to visit a mechanic. Explain the problem to them and they should have the necessary scan tools and cables to connect to your Renegade and reset the light.

The only other option is to simply ignore the light. However, this won’t be an option for many drivers, as it’s obviously frustrating to see error lights and warnings on your dashboard whenever you drive.

FAQs

When will the “Oil Change Due” light appear in a Jeep Renegade?

It depends. Unlike other cars, the light isn’t tied to a particular duration of time or a fixed amount of miles. Instead, it’ll come on after a certain amount of mileage, depending on your driving style. Those who drive more aggressively may see the light appear more quickly than those with gentler and more economic driving styles.

Reset Your Oil Light with Ease
