How to Reset “Service Required” Light on the Hyundai Elantra

According to official Hyundai recommendations, you should service your Elantra every 7,500 to 8,000 miles. This includes making oil changes, swapping out air filters, checking brake fluid, and testing your antifreeze.

However, even if you perform all these tasks without going to a professional service, your “Service Required” light will stay on in the car’s system. Here’s how to reset your service interval and turn off the notification.

In their latest iterations, Elantras can have an LED display screen or a more traditional instrument cluster. The instructions for both types are identical:

  1. Turn on the car electronics without starting the engine.
  2. Hit the “Mode” button until you go to the “Cogwheel” menu on the screen.
  3. Use the navigational button to scroll down to “Convenience” and select “OK.”
  4. Scroll down to “Service interval” and press “OK.”
  5. Go to “Reset.”
  6. Select the “Reset” option.
  7. Confirm your choice when prompted.
  8. Turn off the ignition, then turn the car back on.

In some cases, the service display may be locked. You will need to consult a professional Hyundai service to reset the “Service Required” notifications and intervals.

If you’ve only performed an oil change and reset the oil life counter, the notification for a general service might not go away. This can be due to another system in the vehicle developing a separate issue, which needs to be inspected as soon as possible. Avoid driving the car with the “Service Required” light on.

The 2017 Elantra design put most of the computer navigation features on the steering wheel. Here’s how to use them to reset the service notifications:

  1. Turn on the ignition, but don’t start the engine.
  2. Press the TRIP button on the steering wheel. If you don’t have one, press the “Mode” button (top left on the right side of the steering wheel) until the dash display lists “Trip.”
  3. Hit the “Mode” button until you reach “Service Information,” indicated by a wrench icon.
  4. Press and hold the “Reset” button (bottom left on the right side of the steering wheel, listed as “OK”) for five seconds.
  5. When the service information (miles or time left) starts blinking, press and hold the “Reset” button for a second.
  6. Restart the car.

Replacing the oil and resetting the oil life service counter might not remove the “Service Required” light. If you have previously been able to reset the counter this way, your car may have developed other issues that will need to be inspected. Check the brake fluid, antifreeze, electrical system, brakes, and airbags. Faults in these systems may prompt the computer to flag a “Service Required” notification.

Older Elantras did not have the service indicator integrated into the car’s computer. Instead, the instrument cluster contains two separate warnings for service requirements:

  • SRS (Airbag): Indicates that one or more airbags need to be rechecked by a qualified Hyundai service.
  • ABS: Indicates that the braking system needs to be inspected.

In either case, there’s no simple way to reset the warnings. Get the vehicle inspected by a Hyundai service technician. You may also be able to remove the warnings with a digital scanning tool, but this depends on the exact model of the tool you get and your car’s age.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to reset the “Service Required” alerts on these vehicles without going into the car computer system, which requires specialized software and hardware. Typically, a qualified mechanic might carry these tools and teach you the correct inspection sequence to ensure the warnings stay off.

  1. I’ve followed the steps to reset the oil change line a dozen times and am still getting the service required wrench. Any additional information would be appreciated.
