How to Use the Remote Start in a Hyundai Sonata

Remote start allows you to turn on your vehicle from afar and power up its climate control. Then, when you get inside, you’ll have a nice, comfortable temperature. No more chilly seats in winter or scorching rides home from work in the summer.

With the Hyundai Sonata 2011 and newer models, you can use remote start in a few clicks. Read on to learn more.

Remote Start Hyundai Sonata via Key Fob

One of the easiest ways to start a Sonata remotely is via the key fob. Use these steps:

  1. Hit the closed padlock button on your key fob.
  2. Press and hold the remote start button (circular arrow icon with “HOLD” underneath) within the next four seconds.
  3. Wait for a few seconds until the light on the key fob blinks (older key fobs might not have the light).

Older Sonata models might not come with a key fob that allows you to remote start it. You can usually get an aftermarket key fob with this option since Sonatas made from 2011 onward can have the remote start option installed later.

When using the key fob, the AC will turn on under the last used options, while cars with automatic climate control will have the AC set to 72F.

You need to be within about 30 feet of the car to use the key fob. Note that barriers can significantly decrease this, so it’s best to have your car in sight.

Remote Start Hyundai Sonata via Hyundai BlueLink

If you don’t have a remote-start-capable key fob, you can also use your phone. However, you’ll need an active BlueLink subscription to access Hyundai’s BlueLink app which makes this possible. Here’s how:

  1. Go to your app store, search for Hyundai BlueLink app, and download it.
  2. Tap on the app and login via your Hyundai BlueLink account credentials. You can register an account at MyHyundai if you don’t have one already.
  3. Add your Hyundai Sonata’s identification number to the app. This is available in the user manual or can be found on the MyHyundai website, and you’ll need the chassis number.
  4. Pair your smartphone with your Hyundai Sonata by following the app’s instructions.
  5. Go to the “Remote Commands” section and tap on “Remote START.”
  6. The app will display additional options depending on your subscription and vehicle model before starting the ignition. Confirm the option or preset you want to use then tap the “Remote START” button again.
  7. You will likely be prompted to confirm your identity via the authentication method you set up during account creation. After doing so, the app will signal your Hyundai Sonata to start the engine.
  8. The app will display a notification or confirmation message that the engine has started remotely. The vehicle’s lights should also flash to indicate the remote start has been successful.

For BlueLink to work, both your vehicle and the phone need to have an internet connection. As such, you may experience issues in remote areas with low cellular connectivity.

Remote Start Hyundai Sonata via Website

You might also be able to use your MyHyundai account on any browser to start your vehicle. This will depend on the car model. You will need to follow these steps:

  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Navigate to the MyHyundai website and log in with your account.
  3. Go to the “Digital Key” section.
  4. Select “Remote Start.”
  5. Check additional options such as climate control if you have the required subscription level.

So long as you have an internet connection and your car maintains a cellular connection, remote start should work regardless of distance.

FAQs on Hyundai Electra Remote Start

What Do You Need for Remote Start?

Hyundai’s Remote Start feature has a few limitations and locks in place to prevent misuse:

  • All the doors and the trunk must be closed and locked.
  • The vehicle’s transmission must be in “Park.”
  • The key fob is not located within the vehicle.
  • The brake is not being pressed.
  • The car must have enough fuel and battery, and EV cars can’t be plugged in.
  • The car needs to have been turned on regularly within the last four days.

If you want to use BlueLink or MyHyundai website, you will need to be subscribed to the service.

When Should I Not Use Remote Start?

Avoid starting the car remotely when it is in an enclosed area or close to inflammable items. Additionally, turn off the windshield wipers since they can get damaged if the car gets iced over. You may also want to shut off the radio to prevent battery drain.

How Long Does the Remote Start Last?

The car will automatically shut off after 10 minutes if it remains idle. You can change this timer via the BlueLink app, but it can’t be longer than 10 minutes.

Also, the car will turn off if the brake is pressed or the alarm triggers while the key fob remains outside the vehicle.

Can I Install Remote Start in an Older Hyundai Sonata?

Cars made after 2011 are more likely to support this feature. Consult a registered technician, mechanic, or car electrician to check whether your Sonata can have the feature installed and receive an aftermarket key fob with the remote start button.
