How to Use the Remote Start in a Hyundai Elantra

Are you curious about the technology behind remote start? Our article unravels the mechanics, benefits, and step-by-step instructions to make sure you’re well-versed in remote-starting your Hyundai Elantra.

Note that the Hyundai Elantra has a remote start feature from 2009 and newer models.

Remote Start via Key Fob

The most common way to turn on your Elantra remotely is via the key fob. This is relatively simple but doesn’t provide additional control options. Here’s how:

  1. Press the “Lock” button (closed padlock) on your key fob.
  2. Within the next four seconds, press and hold the remote start button (circular arrow icon with “HOLD” underneath).
  3. Wait for two seconds or until the light on the key fob blinks (older key fobs might not have the light).

Cars that have manual AC settings will start up under the current settings, while vehicles with automatic climate control will set the AC to 72F.

You need to be within 32 feet (10 meters) of the car to use the key fob. Barriers such as walls might lower this range significantly.

Remote Start via Hyundai BlueLink

You can also use your phone to turn on the car via Hyundai’s BlueLink app. However, you will need an active BlueLink subscription to access the app. Follow these steps:

  1. Use your phone’s dedicated app store to download the Hyundai BlueLink app.
  2. Open the app and log in using your Hyundai BlueLink account credentials. You can create an account at MyHyundai.
  3. Add your Hyundai Elantra’s PIN to the app. This is available in the user manual or can be found on the MyHyundai website through the chassis number.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions in the app to pair your smartphone with your Hyundai Elantra.
  5. Tap on “Remote START” in the “Remote Commands” section.
  6. Depending on your subscription and the car’s model, the app will display additional settings before starting the vehicle. Select the option or preset you want, then tap the “Remote START” button again to confirm.
  7. The app might prompt you to confirm your identity using a PIN, fingerprint, or other authentication methods you’ve set up.
  8. After confirming your identity, the app will send a signal to your Hyundai Elantra to start the engine remotely.
  9. The app might display a loading indicator or a confirmation message that the engine has started. The vehicle’s lights might also flash as an indicator.

BlueLink needs both your vehicle and the phone to be connected to the internet. As such, you may experience connectivity issues in remote areas since the car needs a cellular connection.

Remote Start via Website

You might also be able to use your MyHyundai account on any browser to start your vehicle. This will depend on the car model. You will need to follow these steps:

  1. Open a browser on your PC or mobile device.
  2. Go to the MyHyundai website and log in if needed.
  3. Select the “Digital Key” section.
  4. Choose the “Remote Start” option.
  5. If your subscription allows, turn on additional options such as climate control.

If you have an internet connection and your car has a stable cellular connection, it will start immediately with the settings you choose.

FAQs on Hyundai Electra Remote Start

What Do You Need for Remote Start?

The Hyundai Remote Start system has a few limitations and locks in place to prevent misuse:

  • All the doors and the trunk must be closed and locked.
  • The vehicle must be in “Park.”
  • The key fob is not in the vehicle.
  • The brake is not pressed.
  • The car must have enough battery power.
  • EV cars can’t be connected to a charger.
  • The car has been manually turned on within the last four days.

If you intend to use BlueLink or MyHyundai website, you need to have an active subscription to the service.

When Should I Not Use Remote Start?

Avoid using the remote start option if your car is in an enclosed area or close to flammable items. Also, make sure that you’ve turned off the windshield wipers since they can get damaged if the car is iced over.

How Long Does the Remote Start Last?

If you don’t start driving the vehicle, the car will automatically shut off after 10 minutes. This timer can be changed if you use the BlueLink application when remotely starting the car.

Alternatively, the car will turn off if the brake is pressed, the alarm triggers without the key fob in the car, or if a door is opened from the inside.
