How to Replace Key Fob Battery in a Honda Civic

Have you been experiencing issues with your key fob, such as reduced responsiveness or difficulty in unlocking your vehicle? A simple battery replacement might be the solution. Follow the steps below to replace the key fob battery in your Honda Civic.

2014 – 2023 Models

  1. Turn the key fob over to the backside.
  2. Locate a small lever on the backside of the key fob, move it to the side, and then push up to release the key.
  3. Remove the key from the key fob.
  4. You can use the key or your fingers to pry open the key fob. Gently separate the two halves of the key fob.
  5. Inside the key fob, you will find the battery. It requires a CR2032 battery.
  6. Lift the old battery out, either using a screwdriver or your fingers.
  7. Insert a new CR2032 battery into the battery slot. Make sure the “+” symbol on the battery is facing upward.
  8. Close the key fob by aligning the two halves and snapping them back together.
  9. Securely close the key fob.
  10. Place the key back into the key fob.
  11. Test the key fob to make sure it is working properly.

2001 – 2013 Models

  1. Flip the key fob over and locate the small screw at the base of the fob.
  2. Use a precision screwdriver set to unscrew and remove the small screw.
  3. Look for a notch in the middle of the fob’s base. Insert a small flat-head screwdriver into the notch and twist to loosen the key’s base.
  4. Once the base is loose, gently pull it towards you to remove it from the fob.
  5. Inside the key fob, you’ll find an internal piece containing the battery. Carefully pull out this piece, revealing the battery and buttons.
  6. Examine the internal piece and locate another notch on the upper right corner. Use a flat-head screwdriver to twist and separate this piece into two parts.
  7. With the two parts separated, access the battery. Use a screwdriver to get underneath the battery and pop it out.
  8. The battery you need to replace is a CR 1616 3-volt coin battery. Insert the new battery into the designated slot, ensuring it fits securely.
  9. Reassemble the internal piece by aligning the two parts and snapping them back together. Make sure the buttons are correctly positioned.
  10. Place the internal piece back into the key fob shell.
  11. When putting the shell back on, a small ridge on the top of the internal piece should align correctly with the shell’s opening.
  12. Carefully press the shell and internal piece together until they close securely.
  13. Insert the small screw back into the base of the key fob and tighten it with the precision screwdriver.
  14. Test the buttons to confirm everything is working correctly.
