How to Replace Key Fob Battery in a Ford Explorer

Don’t let a dead key fob battery leave you stranded! Our article is here to help you take matters into your own hands. Learn the essential steps to replace the key fob battery in your car and regain full control of your keyless entry system.

2018 – 2023 Models

  1. Find the release button on the key fob and press it to release the internal valet key.
  2. Once the internal valet key is removed, you’ll see two small holes. Take your flathead Phillips screwdriver or another key and insert it into the top hole. 
  3. Use it as leverage to pop off the back cover of the key fob. Work around the edges of the fob until the back cover comes off.
  4. With the back cover removed, you’ll see the battery inside the key fob. Two plastic pieces are holding the battery in place. Gently pull these back to release the battery.
  5. Take the old CR2450 battery out and insert the new CR2450 battery into the slot. Make sure the tech side (positive side) of the battery is facing you when you push it back in.
  6. Line up the back cover with the key fob and press it back into position. It should click into place securely.
  7. Ensure the battery replacement was successful by testing the key fob on your car. 

1995 – 2017 Models

  1. Purchase a new CR2032 coin battery.
  2. Locate the small button on the back of the key fob and press it to release the metal key.
  3. Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry open the key fob case.
  4. Remove the old battery from the key fob.
  5. Insert the new battery into the key fob with the positive (+) side facing up.

Close the key fob case and snap it back together.
