How to Program a Toyota Prius Key Fob

2009 – 2023 Models

Please note that this vehicle cannot be programmed on board, so you’ll need the expertise of a qualified professional to program the smart key remote fobs.

Find an automotive locksmith near your location. They will connect your Prius to computer equipment that can program the smart key remote fob and ensure it works seamlessly with your vehicle.

2005 – 2009 Models

(These instructions are for key fobs with a black Toyota Logo). 

  1. Open the driver’s door and remove the key fob from the ignition.
  2. Put the key fob in the ignition and pull it out again 2x in 5 seconds. 
  3. Open and close the driver’s door 2x in 40 seconds. 
  4. Press the power button on then off again, but do NOT press the brake.
    1. 1x to keep the original codes
    2. 2x to reprogram and erase the original code
    3. 3x to check registered remotes
    4. 5x to erase all codes
  5. Remove the key from the ignition. 
  6. The car will lock/unlock based on the mode you selected.
  7. Press the lock and unlock buttons for 2 seconds. 
  8. Immediately press the lock button again. 
  9. The car will lock/unlock automatically 1x (if it does it a second time, that means it didn’t work). 
  10. When you’re finished, open the driver’s side door. This will leave the programming mode.

2001-2003 Models

  1. With the car off, close all doors except for the driver’s side door
  2. Quickly put the key in the ignition and pull it out (don’t turn it). 
  3. Close and open the driver’s side door
  4. Quickly put the key in the ignition and pull it out (don’t turn it). 
  5. Close and open the driver’s side door
  6. Quickly put the key in the ignition and LEAVE it. 
  7. Close the driver’s door
  8. Turn the car on, but don’t start it. Then turn it off again. 
  9. Pull out the key
  10. The door should now automatically lock and unlock (repeat steps if they don’t). 
  11. Press and hold the key fob’s lock and unlock buttons for 2 seconds.
  12. Quickly press and hold the key fob’s lock button only for 2 seconds. 
  13. The car should auto-lock and unlock 1x (if it does it 2x, you’ll need to start again). 

Open the driver’s side door to exit and finish.

  1. Are these instructions applicable to the 2010 Prius? I don’t want to brick my car just to pair a new key fob. My original key works but I don’t recall the remote start working with for a while now.
    For 2010+ there is no ignition (key cylinder). Just the big “on/off” button. (with foot on the brake or not…
