Honda CRV: How To Open Trunk

There are several ways to open the trunk of a Honda CRV: using an unlock button on the instrument panel, unlock button on the remote transmitter, a button on the tailgate, and a hands-free kicking motion under the rear bumper.

We prepared a quick guide to show you how to open the trunk of a Honda CRV.

2017 – 2022 Models

These models have a power tailgate that opens in four ways: pressing the trunk release button on the dashboard, unlock button on the remote transmitter, the trunk release handle on the tailgate, and kicking motions under the bumper.

Dashboard Button Method

1. Put the vehicle in park on level ground.
2. Press the tailgate release button on the dashboard for one second.
3. The vehicle will beep, and the hazard lights will flash to indicate the trunk is opening.

Remote Transmitter Method

1. Put the vehicle in the LOCK/OFF mode.
2. Press the power tailgate button on the remote transmitter until you hear a beep and the lights flash.
3. The trunk will open.

Manual Method

1. Unlock all vehicle doors.
2. Push down the tailgate release handle until the vehicle beeps.
3. Step back to allow the tailgate to open.

Hands-Free Access Method

1. Approach the trunk with your smart entry key in your pocket, hand, purse, etc.
2. Make a slow kicking motion below the rear bumper.
3. The vehicle will beep, and the hazard lights will flash to indicate the trunk is opening.

2012 – 2016 Models

There are three ways to open the trunk in these models: using the remote, manually, and an unlock button on the dashboard.

Remote Transmitter/Key Method

1. Press and hold the power tailgate button to unlock the trunk.
2. Lift the trunk.

Manual Method

1. Press the trunk release button at the back of the vehicle.
2. Raise the trunk and open it fully.

Trunk Release Button on the Dashboard

1. Park the vehicle.
2. Press and hold the trunk release button on the dashboard.
3. Lift the trunk and open it fully.

1997 – 2011 Models

You can open the trunk in these models in two ways: using the unlock button on the remote transmitter and manually pushing the tailgate release lever.

Using Remote Transmitter

1. Put the vehicle in park.
2. Turn off the ignition.
3. Press the unlock button on the remote transmitter twice.

OR

1. Insert the key in the keyhole on the trunk to unlock the tailgate.
2. Turn the key counterclockwise direction twice.
3. Lift the trunk.

Manual Unlocking

1. Push the trunk release downwards.
2. Lift the tailgate and open it fully.
