Often, the simplest features in a car matter the most. Like the clock. It lets you quickly check the time while you drive, without having to do anything risky, like looking at your phone or glancing at your watch.
Unfortunately, setting car clocks can be needlessly complicated. This guide will help out, covering how to set the time in a GMC Sierra. Note that since the Sierra is almost identical to the Chevrolet Silverado, these methods should also work in a Silverado.

How to Set the Clock on a 5th Generation GMC Sierra (2019-Now)
Let’s kick off with a look at the most recent iteration of the Sierra. If your vehicle was made from 2019 onward, it’s part of the Sierra 5th generation. It’s got all the latest features, which should include a touchscreen display that you can use to set the clock pretty easily.
- Press the “Home” button to take your infotainment system back to the “Home” page.
- Tap the “Settings” icon. In the “Settings” menu, you should see a button labeled either “Time/Date” or “Time and Date.” Tap on that.
- You may now see a setting labeled “Automatic Time and Date,” and it may be highlighted green or toggled on. You’ll need to turn that off in order to manually adjust the time. If this setting isn’t present in your Sierra, just ignore this step and move on.
- Tap on the “Set Time” button. Then, use the arrows provided on the screen to adjust the hours and minutes accordingly.
- Hit the back arrow when you’re done to confirm the new time.
Note that you can use the same settings menu to switch between 12- and 24-hour clocks, as well as adjusting the date. Additionally, remember to leave “Automatic Time and Date” off. If you turn it back on, it’ll automatically change the time from whatever you set to whatever the car thinks the time is.
How to Set the Clock on a 4th Generation GMC Sierra (2014-2019)
If your Sierra is a little older, from 2014 to 2019, it’ll be part of the 4th generation. For those vehicles, setting the time is mostly an easy process, too. But it requires a few steps that can be tricky if you’ve not done it before.
- Turn your ignition to the “On” position, but there’s no need to start the engine.
- Tap the “Home” button next to the menu knob.
- Touch on the “Settings” menu, then “Time and Date.”
- Tap on “Set Time” and use the arrows to adjust the hours and minutes.
- You can also adjust the AM/PM setting accordingly, and decide between 12- and 24-hour clocks, before hitting “Back” or “Home” to confirm.
Note that your vehicle, like the 5th gen Sierras, may also have “Automatic Time” or “GPS Time” enabled. If that’s switched on, the car will try to set its time automatically, and you won’t be able to access the manual controls. You’ll have to turn “GPS Time” off via the “Time and Date” menu first before adjusting it.
How to Set the Clock on Older GMC Sierras (Pre-2014)
If your Sierra is older than the others listed above, the process for setting the time can vary. You most likely won’t have a touchscreen display to interact with, so you’ll have to rely on the buttons and dials around the radio or central console.
First Method
- Turn your ignition “On” but don’t start the engine up.
- Push the “Power” button on your radio.
- Press “Clock” to access the time settings.
- Push the button beneath the word “Hour,” then turn the music dial on the right to adjust the hour.
- Push the button under the word “Minute” to switch to the minutes, and use the dial again to set the right time.
- Push the “Power” button again to confirm.
Second Method
- Turn the ignition on.
- Make sure the radio is off (push the power button to turn it off if needed).
- Push and hold the lower left button below the tune knob.
- You should hear a beep that lets you know the clock is ready to set.
- Press that same button you were holding previously to adjust the hours, and the similarly shaped button on the other side of the knob for minutes.
- Power the radio back on to confirm the new time.
Stay Up-to-Date in Your GMC Sierra
With these easy methods, you should be able to set the correct time in your Sierra. That’ll help you handle any random clock resets or adjustments you might need to make for daylight savings. If none of these methods work, you may have a slightly different interface. It’s best to check your owner’s manual for more details – it should have a tutorial to guide you through the clock.
This doesn’t work. I had to turn off “Automatic Time and Date” then it would allow me to manually change the clock.
What the hell good is Automatic Time an Date if it won’t automatically change the time?
I Have the same problem with my 2019 Sierra. Can set it manually, when I turn off Auto setting, but as soon as I turn “Auto Setting” back on, it returns to incorrect time. Any luck for you?
My dash doesn’t look like that at all. Don’t have power button don’t have hour button etc. My clock is separate from radio Don’t have CD player T
