My Mother In Law was driving our RAV4 recently, and we needed gas. As she’s pulling into the gas station, she asks me, “Which side is the tank on?” I told her it’s on the left, and told her about the arrow on the instrument panel that indicates which side the gas tank is located on.
She was blown away. “That’s a nice little feature!” she said.
She was even more amazed to find that this arrow exists on most vehicles made these days. She’d never noticed that before.

Where is the Fuel Icon Arrow?
If you’re like my MIL, know that you’re not alone in this. A lot of people have no idea about this useful little feature. So let’s talk for a second about where you can typically find it.
The arrow is typically located next to the fuel gauge on the dashboard and points either to the left or right, depending on the tank’s position. This feature is especially handy when driving a new or unfamiliar car, as it eliminates the need to get out of the car to check which side the gas tank is on.
If you travel a lot and deal with renting different vehicles, knowing about the arrow is such a life-saver when you’re refueling.
Did you know about the arrow next to the fuel icon?
Note: Cars manufactured before the 1990s may not have the fuel icon arrow.
