Ford Maverick: How to Release/Open Fuel Door

Ford unveiled the Ford Maverick, a small SUV, in 1970. It was intended to be a practical and versatile vehicle for drivers and a smaller, cheaper alternative to larger, more expensive SUVs. Depending on the generation, there may be different ways to open the vehicle’s fuel door.

2021 – 2023 Models

  1. Park your Ford Maverick and turn off the engine.
  2. Locate the fuel door release lever on the lower left side of the driver’s seat. It has a small fuel pump icon next to it. Some Ford Mavericks may have a button or switch located on the dashboard or center console.
  3. Pull the fuel door release lever towards the driver’s seat to release the fuel door.
  4. Move to the outside of the vehicle and locate the fuel door. It should be located on the rear quarter panel, behind the driver’s door.
  5. Push on the fuel door to release it from the latch and swing it open.
  6. Unscrew the fuel cap to access the fuel tank.

1970 – 1977 Models

Some Ford Mavericks from this era may not have a fuel door release lever, so the fuel door may be opened manually to release it from the latch.

  1. Park your Ford Maverick and turn off the engine.
  2. Locate the fuel door release lever, on the driver’s side floorboard, near the front of the seat.
  3. Pull the fuel door release lever towards the driver’s seat to release the fuel door.
  4. Move to the outside of the vehicle and locate the fuel door on the rear quarter panel behind the driver’s door.
  5. Push on the fuel door to release it from the latch and swing it open.
  6. Unscrew the fuel cap to access the fuel tank.

Note: If you’re having difficulty locating the fuel door release lever or opening the fuel door, consult the owner’s manual or a certified Ford mechanic for assistance.
