Ford Key Clasp Broken – How to fix

If you’re like me and have a base model Ford built sometime around 2000-2020, the plastic clasp, arch thing that connects to your keychain has probably broken off. It happened to me this week and I decided to fix it.

Thankfully it is not a chip key so it’s easy enough to either replace with a new model or drill a hole in the existing key. I decided to sand it down and drill a hole.

On the left is a non broken model of the Ford H92-PT key.

You can purchase a replacement key, just search the part number H92-PT. Instead I chose to drill a new hole which I’ll detail below.

Options for fixing a broken Ford key

I gathered a few options from this reddit post and this forum post.

  1. Replacement key
  2. Superglue
  3. Rubber key cover
  4. Drill a hole

For me I chose to drill a hole. The replacement key seemed like too much work when a hole would work just as fine. The superglue examples from the forum post looked kinda janky. And the rubber key cover didn’t look as nice.

Thankfully the forum post had this image which shows the inside of the key. Inside is simply a continuation of the metal key and a small transponder thing which connects to your car’s computer.

Below is an image of the key opened up. The transponder is black, but the person who posted this image colored it white so it’d be easier to see. I added the red part to point out the location of the transponder.

You can drill anywhere in the plastic except where the transponder and metal key is.

First I sanded down the broken edges:

I used a file and and then sandpaper for a smooth finish.

Drilling a hole

I was going to drill a hole here and I think it would have been cool to show the finished project. But for now I’m keeping the key as-is. That way I can leave my bulky keychain in the truck and only need to take my lightweight single key with me.
