Ford Explorer: How To Open Trunk

Here’s how to open the trunk of a Ford Explorer. Each model year has a few ways you can open the trunk of your SUV.

2011 – 2023 Models

There are four ways to open the trunk of these models:

1. Press the open trunk button 2x on the vehicle’s key fob.
2. To use the foot-activated tailgate, with the keys in your pocket, move your foot underneath the back of the car.
3. To manually open the trunk from the outside, with the car unlocked, press the button on the liftgate underneath and to the right of the “Ford” sign at the rear of the vehicle.
4. In an emergency and inside the car, remove the plastic cap covering a lever at the center of the tailgate. Pull the lever to open the trunk.

2002 – 2010 Models

There are three ways to open the trunk of these models:

1. Press the open trunk button 2x on the vehicle’s key fob.
2. To manually open the trunk from the outside, with the car unlocked, press the button on the liftgate underneath and to the right of the “Ford” sign at the rear of the vehicle.
3. In an emergency and inside the car, remove the plastic cap covering a lever at the center of the tailgate. Pull the lever to open the trunk.

1992 – 2001 Models

There are two ways to open the trunk of these models:

1. To manually open the trunk from the outside, with the car unlocked, press the button on the liftgate underneath and to the right of the “Ford” sign at the rear of the vehicle.
