Ford Explorer: How To Reset ‘Oil Change Required’

Learn how to reset the oil change light on the Ford Explorer using these steps.

2020-2022 Models

  1. Using the directional pad on the left side of the steering wheel, select “Settings“.
  2. Select “Oil Life“.
  3. Press and hold the “OK” button.

2016-2019 Models

  1. Using the directional pad on the left side of the steering wheel, select “Settings“.
  2. Choose “Vehicle“.
  3. Select “Oil Life Reset“.
  4. Press and hold the “OK” button.

2011-2015 Models

These models will display an “Change Engine Oil Soon when the oil life is 10% or less. It will display an “Oil Change Required” message when oil life reaches 0%.

  1. Using the directional pad on the left side of the steering wheel, select “Settings“.
  2. Choose “Convenience“.
  3. Select “Oil Life Reset“.
  4. Press and hold the “OK” button.

2002-2010 Models

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
  2. Press and release the “Select/Reset” stem button on the instrument panel to toggle the options until the “Hold Reset For Setup Menu” option appears.
  3. Press and hold “Select/Reset” for 3 seconds. (The display will not change on this step)
  4. Press “Select/Reset” to toggle the options until the “Hold Reset if New Oil” option appears.
  5. Press and hold “Select/Reset” until it says “Oil Life Set to 100%“.

2001 and Earlier Models

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
  2. Press the “Oil Change Reset” button on the overhead Instrument panel for 5 seconds.

After a brief countdown, the Oil Life will be reset.
