American station-wagon buyers have fewer choices than ever for 2026 and 2027. Volkswagen, Buick, Jaguar, and several other manufacturers have left the segment, while Volvo and Porsche are discontinuing their remaining U.S. wagons after the 2026 model year.

The remaining selection is almost entirely made up of European luxury vehicles. It ranges from the relatively efficient Volvo V60 Cross Country to 700-horsepower performance wagons and fully electric Porsche Taycan models.

How many new wagons are left?

There are nine distinct wagon models or body styles for 2026. When individual Porsche Taycan trims are counted, buyers have 13 configurations. Only two traditional wagons are currently confirmed and EPA-rated for 2027.

Why Are There So Few New Wagons?

Wagons have largely been replaced by crossover SUVs in the United States. Automakers can give a wagon additional ground clearance, body cladding, and a taller seating position, market it as a crossover, and usually attract more buyers.

This shift eliminated many affordable choices. The Volkswagen Golf SportWagen and Golf Alltrack ended U.S. production after 2019. The Buick Regal TourX and Jaguar XF Sportbrake disappeared after 2020, the MINI Clubman ended after 2024, and the traditional Volvo V60 and V90 were previously withdrawn in favor of their raised Cross Country versions.

The result is that no traditional 2026 wagon starts below $50,000. Most remaining models are luxury or high-performance vehicles with limited sales volumes.

Gasoline and Hybrid Wagons Ranked by MPG

1. Volvo V60 Cross Country: 26 MPG Combined

The 2026 Volvo V60 Cross Country is the most fuel-efficient traditional gasoline wagon. Its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine uses mild-hybrid assistance and produces 247 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard.

It is also the least expensive true wagon in the comparison. Unfortunately, U.S.-bound production ended during 2026, so shoppers are limited to remaining dealer inventory.

2. Mercedes-Benz E 450 All-Terrain: 25 MPG Combined

The E 450 All-Terrain combines a 375-horsepower turbocharged inline-six with mild-hybrid assistance, standard all-wheel drive, and adjustable air suspension. It delivers nearly the same fuel economy as the smaller Volvo while offering more power and a larger, more luxurious cabin.

It is also the safest long-term choice for a buyer who wants a new wagon because Mercedes-Benz has already certified it for the 2027 model year.

3. Volvo V90 Cross Country: 25 MPG Combined

The V90 Cross Country is larger than the V60 and provides one of the roomiest cargo areas in the segment. Its 295-horsepower mild-hybrid engine earns 25 MPG combined.

Production ended in 2025, however, and Volvo no longer accepts new orders. Any untitled 2026 examples will be limited to vehicles already allocated to dealers.

4. Audi A6 allroad: 24 MPG Combined

The A6 allroad produces 335 horsepower from a turbocharged V6 and includes Quattro all-wheel drive. Its adaptive air suspension can increase ground clearance for snow, dirt roads, and damaged pavement.

It is quicker and more powerful than the Volvos while still returning 30 MPG on the highway. Audi had not announced a 2027 U.S. model when this article was updated.

Performance Wagons

Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid Wagon

The AMG E 53 is the most efficient of the remaining high-performance wagons when its battery is charged. It produces 577 horsepower, can travel up to approximately 41 miles on electricity, and is rated at 56 MPGe during electric operation.

After the usable battery charge is depleted, it returns 22 MPG combined on gasoline. That is substantially better than the BMW M5 Touring’s gasoline rating.

Audi RS 6 Avant Performance

The RS 6 Avant is the traditionalist’s performance wagon. Its twin-turbocharged V8 produces 621 horsepower and sends power to all four wheels without relying on a plug-in hybrid system.

The tradeoff is fuel consumption. Its EPA rating of 16 MPG combined is among the lowest of any current passenger car.

BMW M5 Touring

The M5 Touring combines a twin-turbocharged V8 and electric motor for 717 horsepower. It offers approximately 24 miles of electric driving but returns only 13 MPG combined once operating primarily on gasoline.

The 2027 M5 Touring starts at $125,300 and is one of only two traditional wagons currently confirmed for that model year.

Electric Wagons

Porsche offers five Taycan wagon configurations for 2026. The GTS Sport Turismo is the most efficient at 82 MPGe combined and has the longest EPA range at 279 miles.

The Cross Turismo has a slightly raised ride height and protective body cladding. The entry Taycan 4 Cross Turismo provides the best combination of efficiency, range, and price within that lineup, returning 81 MPGe and traveling an EPA-estimated 277 miles per charge.

Porsche has discontinued both wagon body styles in the United States for 2027. Remaining 2026 vehicles may continue to appear at dealers after production ends.

Wagon-Like Alternatives

The scarcity of traditional wagons means many shoppers will also consider crossover SUVs with low roofs and wagon-like proportions. These are not included in the main ranking because their manufacturers classify them as SUVs.

Which Wagons Are Available for 2027?

Only two traditional station wagons have been clearly confirmed and EPA-rated for the 2027 U.S. market:

Volvo will not offer a 2027 wagon in the United States, and Porsche has eliminated the Taycan Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo from its 2027 U.S. lineup.
