Dodge Ram: How to Open Tailgate

Every truck owner/driver uses their tailgate—it’s part of the appeal. This is especially true for anyone who owns a truck. Below are directions for opening the tailgate of a Dodge Ram.

2019 – 2023 Models

Power Tailgate

1. Walk to the rear of the vehicle.
2. Push the tailgate release pad on the center of the tailgate.
3. The tailgate will lower itself on its own.

Multifunction Tailgate

1. Walk to the rear of the vehicle.
2. Push down the paddle below the release latch.
3. Pull the release latch. This opens the larger of the tailgate doors.
4. Pull open the door.
5. Pull the release handle on the side of the tailgate door to open the second door.
6. Pull open the second door.

Closing the Multifunction Tailgate: Close the smaller door first, then close the larger door. Pull back on the doors to make sure it is latched.

2006 – 2018 Models

1. Walk to the rear of the vehicle.
2. Pull on the latch in the center of the tailgate.
3. Lower the tailgate until the support cables are fully extended.

Closing the Tailgate: Lift the tailgate until both sides are latched. Pull back on the tailgate to ensure it is closed. Do NOT slam the tailgate. Slamming it can cause damage.
