Chevy Traverse: How To Open Trunk

Chevrolet provides several ways to open the trunk (liftgate) depending on your vehicle year model: hands-free, manually, and using the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system.

2018 – 2022 Models

RKE System Method

  1. With your car in park, press the button with the image of a car with an open trunk symbol on your car key.
    • On some models, you need to press the button twice.
  2. When the rear lights flash and your car chimes, the trunk is opening.
  3. The trunk will open automatically.

Manual Method

  1. Approach your vehicle’s liftgate and locate the button for opening the trunk. (Located under the Chevy logo towards the bottom of the liftgate.
  2. Press the liftgate button.
  3. When the rear lights flash and your car chimes, the trunk is opening.
  4. Step away from the car and wait for the trunk to open automatically.

Hands-Free Method

If your hands are full and you can’t open your trunk with your key or hands, you can open your liftgate by extending your foot (similar to a kick stance) under a designated place near the rear bumper.

  1. Ensure your key fob is close to the vehicle (in your handbag, pocket, or hands).
  2. The vehicle will sense your key and light up a logo projection under the liftgate to signal you where to kick. (This projection lights up automatically when you’re within 6 feet of the liftgate).
  3. Kick towards the vehicle above the projected logo and under your rear bumper. (Don’t swing your foot side to side or step on the logo because it won’t work).
  4. When the rear lights flash and your car chimes, the trunk is opening.

2009 – 2017 Models

The older models of Chevy Traverse do not offer hands-free trunk opening.

RKE System Method

  1. With your car in park, press 2x the button with the image of a car with an open trunk symbol on your car key.
  2. When the rear lights flash and your car chimes, the trunk is opening.
  3. The trunk will open automatically.

Manual Method

  1. Ensure your car is parked.
  2. Press the touchpad under the liftgate lever.
  3. The trunk will open automatically.
