Chevy Silverado: How To Open Trunk

A Chevy Silverado’s trunk provides extra space to carry all your essentials, from running garbage to the dump to packing for a road trip. For the older models, opening the trunk shouldn’t be tricky. However, newer Chevy Silverado models have additional options (from the traditional ones) that you might not know about.

Here, we discuss everything you need to know about opening your Chevy Silverado’s trunk, depending on your model year.

2020 – 2022 Models

The latest Chevy Silverado models have three ways of opening the trunk; they include:

The “Touch” Button

The latest Chevy Silverado models have tailgate handles fitted with sensors that can open and close the tailgate with the touch of a button.

1. Ensure your car is in park.
2. To open, lightly touch the tailgate handle’s sensor and watch it lower.
3. Touch and hold the same sensor to lift the tailgate back up.

The Trunk Button on the Center Stack

1. First, park your Chevy Silverado.
2. Locate your center stack in the cab of your Silverado.
3. Locate the open trunk button towards the bottom of your center stack. Look for the image of a vehicle with an open trunk.
4. Press the open trunk switch to lower the liftgate.
5. Press and hold the button to lift the liftgate back up.

The Key Fob

1. Park your Chevy Silverado.
2. Using your key fob, unlock your car
3. Press the unlock tailgate button twice. You should hear a beep before the tailgate lowers.

2017 – 2019 Models

For the following model years, there are only two options for opening the trunk: the key fob and the open and close trunk switch available on the center console.

The Trunk Button on the Center Stack

1. Park your Chevy Silverado.
2. Locate your center stack in the cab of your Silverado.
3. Locate the open trunk button towards the bottom of your center stack. Look for the image of a vehicle with an open trunk.
4. Press the open trunk switch to lower the liftgate. Press and hold the button to lift the liftgate back up.

The Key Fob

1. Make sure your car is in park.
2. Press the unlock trunk button twice to open the trunk
3. Press the unlock trunk button once, then press and hold it to close the trunk

1999 – 2017 Models

You can open the trunk of your vehicle manually by using your key.

1. Park your Chevy Silverado.
2. Insert the key into its port (right beside the trunk’s handle).
3. Use your hand to pull the handle slightly towards you to open the trunk.
4. Gently lower the tailgate.
5. Push the trunk back up until it clicks into position to lock it.
