Chevy HHR: How To Open Trunk

If you are lucky enough to own a Chevy HHR, you know of its sleek style, high roof, and spacious trunk space. But spacious trunk space is obsolete if you cannot figure out how to open your trunk. Follow the steps below to get the most out of your Chevy HHR trunk.

2007-2011

The 2007 Chevy HHR does not have a courtesy trunk release button on the inside of your car, but it does have one on the outside of your liftgate.

Normal Operation

  1. Unlock your liftgate using your key fob. Click the unlock icon twice to unlock your trunk.
  2. Locate the liftgate touchpad on the handle above your rear license plate. Press the touchpad to release your trunk.
  3. Once your liftgate is slightly ajar, it will rise by itself. At the same time, your interior lights will light, providing you light in the trunk area.

Emergency Operation

If your Chevy HHR loses power or you cannot use your key fob, you can open your trunk from inside your vehicle.

  1. Maneuver yourself to the rear of your car. This will involve climbing into the rear of your vehicle.
  2. Remove the trim plug on the inside of your liftgate. The trim plug is located near the center and low on the trunk door.
  3. Once exposed, you can insert a tool to push the release lever towards the rear of your vehicle.
  4. The liftgate will release, and you can reinstall the trim plug to prevent losing the plug.

2006

While the 2006 Chevy HHR does not have a courtesy trunk release button inside your car, you can easily open it from the outside of the vehicle.

  3. Once your liftgate is slightly ajar, it will rise by itself. At the same time, your interior lights will light, providing you light in the trunk area.
