Ford Expedition Oil Life Reset: Instructions by Model Year

·

On most recent Ford Expeditions, you reset the oil life from the instrument cluster with the steering wheel buttons. Turn the ignition on, open the Settings menu, find the oil life item, and hold the OK button until it returns to 100%. Older Expeditions use different controls, so the steps below are grouped by how the vehicle’s display works.

One rule applies to every year: only reset the monitor after the oil and filter have actually been changed.

Identify the Reminder First

Not every dashboard message is an oil-life reminder. Match what you see to this list before touching any buttons.

  • Oil change or maintenance reminder: A text message in the display, such as an oil change request, or a low oil-life percentage. This is the only one a reset clears.
  • Red oil pressure warning: A red oil-can symbol, sometimes with a chime. This means a possible lubrication problem. Pull over safely, shut the engine off, and check the oil level. Don’t keep driving on it, and don’t reset anything.
  • Check engine light: An amber engine symbol. This is a fault code issue and has nothing to do with oil life. Resetting the monitor won’t turn it off.

Resetting the monitor only restarts a countdown. It doesn’t change the oil, replace the filter, or fix a fault. Reset only the service you actually completed.

Reset Procedure by Display Type

Ford changed the cluster and menu layout over the Expedition’s life, and I can’t confirm exact year cutoffs from memory. Go by what your display looks like, then check the maintenance section of your owner’s manual for the exact menu names.

Newer Expeditions With Steering Wheel Menu Controls

These have a cluster you navigate with the directional pad and OK button on the steering wheel. This is the layout on the redesigned 2018-and-newer trucks. Menu wording can vary by model year and cluster, so treat the labels below as a guide.

  1. Park the truck and set the parking brake.
  2. Turn the ignition to the on position. Engine off is the usual starting point, but confirm that in your manual.
  3. Use the steering wheel arrows to open Settings in the cluster.
  4. Scroll to the oil life item (it should say Oil Life or similar) and select it.
  5. Press and hold OK until the display shows a reset confirmation or 100%.
  6. Back out of the menu and cycle the ignition off, then on, to confirm the reminder stays cleared.

Older Expeditions With a Message Center

Older trucks use a smaller message center with its own buttons or a steering wheel stalk or pad. The general method is similar: ignition on, scroll the display to the oil life screen, then hold the reset or OK button until the percentage returns to 100%. The button names and the number of steps differ by year, so find the oil life reset steps in your manual before you try anything. I won’t guess at button sequences, because a wrong guess could change other settings.

If Your Display Has No Oil Life Item

Some older Expeditions may not have an oil-life monitor at all. If you scroll every screen and never see one, the truck probably relies on a fixed mileage or time interval. In that case, follow the schedule in the owner’s manual and use a sticker or a note in your records. Don’t buy a scanner to look for a feature the truck doesn’t have.

If the Reset Doesn’t Work

  • Check the ignition state. The menu may only respond with the ignition on or the engine off, depending on the cluster. Try cycling the ignition and starting again.
  • Hold longer. The reset usually needs a sustained press on OK, not a tap.
  • Confirm you’re in the right menu. Look for oil life, not a general service or tire reminder.
  • Look for other messages. An active warning may block menu access until you acknowledge it.
  • Check the oil level and look for leaks if the reminder keeps coming back right after a reset.

If the display still won’t take the reset, a Ford dealer can do it. It’s a quick task for them.

Doing the Oil Change Yourself

A clean fill is easier with the right funnel. A basic oil change funnel set helps keep oil off the engine, but check that the spout fits your fill opening. For the filter and oil, confirm the exact part and oil specification for your engine in the owner’s manual. Expedition engines differ by year, so don’t rely on a generic fitment match.

FAQ

Does resetting the oil life make the oil change count as done?

No. The reset only tells the truck a new interval is starting. If you reset it without changing the oil, the monitor will run on old, worn oil and won’t warn you in time.

Will resetting the oil life turn off the check engine light?

No. The check engine light is tied to emissions and engine fault codes, and the oil-life monitor is a separate maintenance counter. A red oil pressure warning is separate too, and it needs attention right away, not a reset.
