The 2011 Chevy Cruze uses SAE 5W-30 engine oil meeting GM’s dexos specification. Capacity depends on the engine: the 1.4L turbo takes approximately 4.25 U.S. quarts with a filter change, while the 1.8L takes approximately 4.76 U.S. quarts.
These specifications apply to U.S.-market gasoline models. For a Cruze sold in another market, check its specific owner’s manual.
Oil Type and Capacity by Engine
| Engine | Oil viscosity | Capacity with filter |
|---|---|---|
| 1.4L turbo four-cylinder | SAE 5W-30 | 4.25 U.S. qt / 4.0 L |
| 1.8L four-cylinder | SAE 5W-30 | 4.76 U.S. qt / 4.5 L |
A five-quart container covers either engine’s listed refill capacity. Do not pour in the entire container automatically; confirm the final level with the dipstick.
Which Oil Should You Buy?
A dexos1 Gen 3-licensed full-synthetic 5W-30 is a straightforward choice. GM confirms that dexos1 Gen 3 oils are backward compatible with earlier dexos1 requirements when used in the correct viscosity.
Check for both the 5W-30 grade and the dexos1 approval on the container. “Full synthetic” describes the oil formulation; it does not, by itself, establish that the oil carries GM’s approval.
Brand choice is secondary to those specifications. GM’s licensed dexos1 Gen 3 oil list lets you check individual products.
Can You Use a Different Viscosity?
Chevrolet specifies 0W-30 for extreme cold below −20°F (−29°C). Otherwise, follow the standard 5W-30 recommendation. The manual advises against substituting heavier grades such as 10W-30, 10W-40, or 20W-50.
Check the Level After Filling
Park on level ground and switch off the engine. Allow several minutes for oil to drain back, then remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, fully reinsert it, and check again. Keep the level within the marked operating range.
The listed capacities are approximate refill amounts, not quantities to add when topping up an engine that already contains oil.
When Is an Oil Change Due?
Follow the oil-life monitor and change the oil and filter at least annually. Reset the monitor after the service. A remaining-oil-life percentage is not an oil-level reading, so continue checking the dipstick between changes.
